Chapter Summary

This chapter reviews what economic theory tells us about policy-making in a context of conflict resolution, drawing mainly on the insights of North (1990) and Olson (2000). It describes the economic context of seven of the eight case study regions, with a view to identifying the external and internal constraints that condition the scope for economic policy formation. In two of the case studies (Bougainville and Mindanao), self-determination dispute has taken place within a region of a nation-state that appears likely to continue to play a dominant role in destiny of the region experiencing the self-determination conflict. It then examines the case of Northern Ireland. The chapter covers the key insights from economic theorizing about the nature of encompassing economic policies and the likelihood that they can implemented in power-sharing arrangements; and the insights that we can obtain from development experience of some of the less-developed small EU member states.

Keywords: Bougainville; conflict resolution; economic policies; EU member states; Mindanao; Northern Ireland; power-sharing arrangements; self-determination dispute
