Chapter Summary

This chapter talks about the two organizations of Caribbean countries: the Caribbean Common Market and Community (CARICOM), and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). First, it discusses the institutional bodies in CARICOM, the role of Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) in dispute settlements, and the rule of origin requirements to be followed by countries wishing to take advantage of CARICOMs free trade program. Various other aspects such as the Common External Tariff (CET), safeguard measures to be taken against imports, remedial measures to be taken for unfair trade practices, free movement of labor and capital, and CARICOMs Competition Policy are also examined, before focusing on CARICOM's partnership agreements with the U.S., the European Union, Canada, the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica. The second part of the chapter deals with the OECS, its relationship with the CARICOM, and the proposal to convert Antigua and Barbuda into a free port.
