Chapter Summary

The front matter section of the book Justification and Participation in Christ contains table of contents and acknowledgements. The book discusses three prominent first-generation Re - formers: Luther, Johannes Bugenhagen, and Johannes Brenz. Their doctrines of justification are quite similar: justification takes place in union with Christ. It analyzes the development of Melanchthon’s thought. The book focuses on the Osiandrian controversy. After Luther’s death, Andreas Osiander argued against Melanchthon’s forensic soteriology, claiming that Melanchthon had corrupted Luther’s teaching with his “frigid imaginations” of imputed righteousness.
