Chapter Summary

The self-understanding of the Reformers evidently was that the doctrine of justification was the one by which the Church stands or falls (doctrina stantis et cadentis ecclesiae). In his book Christ Present in Faith, Mannermaa introduces the unio cum Christo theme as the intersection between Lutheran and Orthodox theologies. Luther regards participation in the human-divine person of Christ as the central part of justification, while Formula of Concord (Formula Concordiae, FC), identifies God's indwelling as the consequence of justification. Friederike Nüssel has shown how the different interpretations effect spirituality in practice; his works serves to illustrate how a particular theoretical emphasis effects practice. The aim of this book is to analyze the development of the doctrine of justification from Luther to FC from the point of view of union with Christ. Special attention is paid to the relation between the forensic and effective aspects of justification.
