Chapter Summary

This front matter section of this book International Criminal Law consists of the table of contents, the introduction and the acknowledgements. In 1992, a breakthrough occurred with the Security Council's establishment of the Commission of Experts to investigate violations of international humanitarian law in the former Yugoslavia conflict. This work gave rise to the establishment by the Security Council of the ICTY (1993) followed by the ICTR (1994), then came a number of hybrid or mixed international/national tribunals in Sierra Leone, Kosovo, East Timor and Cambodia. Along a parallel track, the international criminal law (ICL) commenced to address a number of issues, including tightening the definitions of international crimes, providing more specificity to the elements of these crimes and developing the general, procedural, evidentiary and sanctions part of ICL to be applied by international tribunals. This book addresses these and other contemporary issues of ICL.

Keywords: ICTR; ICTY; International Criminal Law (ICL); International Humanitarian Law; Security Council
