Chapter Summary

This chapter examines the spaces of the end-time, since the end of time is also an end of space. It addresses 2Baruch?s general descriptions of the landscapes of the end-time in order to isolate the most important rhetorical devices of the text. The chapter discusses the function of the Kidron valley for the righteous remnant during the end-time, and in particular the description of the community of the righteous as a fortified city within the valley in 2:1?2. The main questions it poses are: how does 2Baruch envisage the remnant?s marginal existence outside the temple centred Land, and how does 2Baruch construct space during the end-time to promote the future redemption and life of Israel? Overall, 2Baruch plays on multivalent allusions to present the endtime city in the Kidron valley. The end-time city can be described both in terms of exile, camp and Land-space.

Keywords: 2Baruch; end-time city; Israel; Kidron valley; landscapes
