Chapter Summary

This section provides some concluding remarks on the book Wisdom in Transition: Act and Consequence in Second Temple Instructions. The book has pointed to a profound shift in certain Second Temple instructions, from an earthly to an otherworldly focus. The content of 4QInstruction and the Wisdom of Solomon indicates a reconfiguration of the traditional model: a righteous person?s ?inheritance? no longer consisted of ?gladness and joy and long life? (Sir 1:12), but ?glory everlasting and peace eternal? (4Q418 126 ii 8). The promise of an otherworldly inheritance would have been a hopeful message for pupils who were forced to accept difficult circumstances and ?live in the world as it is.? The book has highlighted the importance of social context in assessing various instructions and the authors? act-consequence understanding.

Keywords: 4QInstruction; act-consequence understanding; Second Temple instructions; social context; Wisdom
