Chapter Summary

This index section presents list of Greek terms that occur in this book Kakos. The book illustrates the anxieties provoked even today by the rhetorical power of an element in the lexicon as underdetermined as we are claiming is the case for Greek kakos: in the U.S., this anxiety has led to an attempt to develop a ?depravity scale?. In U.S. law, the question of whether the way in which a crime was executed constitutes an aggravating factor is important for determining the ensuing punishment: it may make the difference between a life prison sentence or the death penalty.
