Chapter Summary

This chapter recalls Gallus' remarks about the circumstances of Zbigniew's return from exile. It focuses on Zbigniew's arrival in Poland. Zbigniew's advent, as presented by Gallus, seems to belong to the tradition of ritual monarchic advents. Adventus regis, the solemn entry of the ruler, was one of the most important forms of exposing the majesty of medieval monarchs. There is no doubt that also in earlier-medieval Poland the rich and manifold meanings of the royal advent ceremonies were fully understood and given an important place among actions used to construct the monarchic authority of the Piast dukes. The text of the Chronicle suggests that the Krakow entry of Casimir could be associated also with an ideological programme determining the essence of the royal advents, placing them within the cosmic world order. Remarks about Zbigniew's receptions play an important role in Gallus' text.

Keywords: Adventus regis; Casimir's advent; Chronicle; Gallus; Krakow; medieval Poland; Piast duke; royal advent ceremony; Zbigniew's receptions
