Chapter Summary

While soldiers? bodies were disciplined by dressing techniques long before the First World War, this chapter explores specific wartime representations of dress and adornment to consider how they articulated changing ideas about men?s bodies in the context of consumerism and mass technological warfare. Implicated in myths and memories of the war, the appearance of soldiering is part of the popular culture of the war, and uniform codes articulated a range of values about the British army. It is not clear why soldier tailors would find use for drafting guides ?in the trenches? as their work was limited to repair and out-sizes. However, by promoting its services through the ?tailor in the trenches?, The Tailor and Cutter indicated the involvement of the trade in the war effort, and suggested the role of drafting guides based on War Office regulations in large-scale uniform production.
