The character of high medieval kingship has been one of the classic themes of discussion among Norwegian historians in the last hundred years. Marxist-influenced historians like Halvdan Koht, Edvard Bull the Elder, Johan Schreiner, and Andreas Holmsen underlined the king?s role as an instrument for the aristocracy in a dominion based on coercion of the peasants.
