Chapter Summary

This front matter section of the book titled Remapping the Past: Fictions of History in Deng's China, 1979?1997 contains the table of contents, and acknowledgments. Fictions of history make use of both traditional Chinese literary modes and modern Western writing techniques to reinvent the genre. They expand historical fiction to multiple dimensions of historical imagination. A brief introduction to the basic concepts of fiction and history in the Chinese context, and in comparison with their Western equivalents, seems mandatory and beneficial. China under Deng Xiaoping witnessed a postmodern revival of artistic history, as against the modern practice of scientific history.

Keywords: Deng Xiaoping; historical fiction
