Chapter Summary

This chapter presents the history of the monk Baḥīrā, and narrates what Baḥīrā told about himself to the monk Marhab. Marhab the sinner, stayed in the monastery with the monk Baḥīrā for a long time. Baḥīrā related and described this whole history to Marhab in great detail. Marhab took notice of it and was witness to it, and he verified its circumstances and its foundations. Marhab wrote it down and arranged it at his command. Marhab saw that he was honored and distinguished amongst the Arabs and that amongst his people he was loved and well-liked. Baḥīrā used to act as a judge between them, settled their affairs and managed their business, and they were thankful to him and honored him.
