Chapter Summary

The field of international legal regulation most obviously applicable to space activities is the international law of outer space. For instance, recommendations to promote environmentally more benign practices in the use of outer space, especially as concerns the problem of space debris, have been issued by many organs. This chapter examines in more detail the work of such organs as the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee (IADC), the International Law Association (ILA), and the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS), all of which have been trying to mitigate the hazard of space debris. Important regulator of space activities is the UN-sponsored International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The Nuclear Power Source (NPS) Principles only apply to nuclear power sources for electricity generation-not to the possible use of nuclear energy for propulsion purposes or nuclear substances found in space.
