Chapter Summary

This index section contains a list of ancient texts from Old and New Testament of Hebrew Bible, Apocrypha/Deuterocanonical Books, ancient Near Eastern texts, Dead Sea Scrolls, Philo, Josephus, and other ancient Jewish writers/literature, Mishnah, Talmud, and related literature, early Christian literature, and classical and late Antique literature. It also contains a list of modern author names. Demetrius's concern to sort out contradictions appears to demonstrate two things about Jewish identity: first, it shows a self-conscious desire to maintain the integrity of Jewish scripture against possible criticism and skepticism from outsiders and puzzlement or disillusion among fellow Jews. Second, this sort of defense makes sense only if the Jewish writing being dealt with (the book of Genesis) is conceived of as in some way authoritative or scripture.

Keywords: Ancient Texts; Dead Sea Scrolls; Demetrius; Hebrew bible; Jewish writing; Josephus; Philo
