Chapter Summary

As in mss. Parma 2123 (P), Florence 44.14 (F) and Moscow 302/3 (M), the Hebrew text and the English Translation of Sefer Ḥakhmoni (SḤ) have been divided into three main sections: 1) an autobiographical introduction; 2) the commentary on Genesis 1:26; and 3) the commentary on Sefer Yeṣira (SY). The latter has been subdivided - as Shabbatai Donnolo himself states and as is indicated graphically in P, F, M, N, and U - into three "books," corresponding to the groups into which SY divided the letters of the Hebrew alphabet. The work is known in the manuscript tradition under two similar titles, Sefer Ḥakhmoni and Sefer Takhmoni. These are two versions of the name of the father of one of King David's warriors as mentioned in the Bible.
