Chapter Summary

The Īśā Upaniṣad (IU), whose name is derived from the first word of the text is also called the Īśāvāsya Upaniṣad, or the Saṃhitā Upaniṣad. The IU clearly expresses the idea that all ātmans are ultimately one. It has been suggested that the term ātmahanas (“killing the ātman”) may refer to people committing suicide. The Īśā has quite a few stanzas in common with the Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad. The metrical and linguistic evidence suggests that the core of the IU is older than the triṣṭubh-jagatī cores of the Kaṭha and the Śvetāśvatara.

Keywords: ātmans; Īśā Upaniṣad (IU); Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad; triṣṭubh-jagatī
