The Maitrī Upaniṣad(MtU) is also known as the Maitri, Maitreya, Maitrāyaṇa, Maitrāyaṇī or Maitrāyaṇīya Upaniṣad. It is possible that the association of the MtU with the Sāmaveda suggested by the Muktikā Upaniṣad is in part based on the large number of quotations from the Chāndogya Upaniṣad found in the MtU. The discovery of the true nature of the ātman is the central theme in the MtU, as it is in many of the older Upaniṣads. The knowledge of brahman is described as "the knowledge contained in all the Upaniṣads. The MtU contains many unmistakable references to proto-Sāṃkhya ideas throughout.
