Chapter Summary

This index presents a list of terms that are mentioned in the book Text and Authority in the Older Upaniṣads. Central to all Upaniṣads is the idea that humans are bound to an unsatisfying existence because of ignorance, and that true knowledge provides the path to liberation. The Upaniṣads have too often been read in isolation from the Vedic textual corpus to which many of them belong. Many scholars have seen the Upaniṣads as texts that represent a radical break with the earlier Vedic tradition.
