Chapter Summary

The Aitareya Upaniṣad (AU) is commonly regarded as one of the oldest Upaniṣad, though younger than the Bṛhadāraṇyaka or the Chāndogya Upaniṣad. Brahman plays a very minor part in the AU. The focus of the AU is clearly on ātman rather than brahman. A linguistic analysis of the AU confirms that it is one of the very oldest Upaniṣads, though not as old as the Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad or the Chāndogya Upaniṣad.

Keywords: ātman; Aitareya Upaniṣad (AU); brahman; Chāndogya Upaniṣad
