Chapter Summary

The history of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) in Arab territory proves to be very complex because of a great number of organizational changes, varying interpretations of the organization's heritage and a multiplicity of methods for action decided on according to various contexts. The MB movement originally developed around an Egyptian teacher, Hassan Al-Bannā, whose father was a local religious leader. Initially, the movement was engaged in a work of preaching, daʿwah: the religious message was presented, and preaching concentrated on the importance of daily religious practice. At the beginning of the 1940's, the movement was preparing itself to play an expanded role in the Egyptian political arena, and planning to participate in parliamentary elections. In Egypt, the repression lasted until June 1971. In other countries, situations differed. Sometimes the Brotherhood was able to operate in a completely peaceful environment.
