Chapter Summary

This is not a second edition of Political frontiers and boundaries published in 1987. It is designed as a companion volume to The maritime political boundaries of the world, published in 2005. In recent years we have cooperated in writing contributions to the fine series International maritime boundaries, created by Jonathan Charney in 1993, and continued by David Colson and Bob Smith in 2005. We are both indebted to colleagues who are interested in international boundaries on land. Special mention should be made of Richard Schofield who has illuminated the boundary history of the Middle East; Dan Dzurek whose knowledge of boundaries on all continents is encyclopaedic; Ray Milefsky of the Office of the Geographer and Global Issues; Buddhi Shrestha who clarified the development of Nepal's boundaries; and Brendan Whyte who created order out of the chaos that is the borderland between Bangladesh and India.
