Chapter Summary

The divisive nature of frontiers and boundaries has formed the focus of inter-disciplinary studies by economists, geographers, historians, lawyers and political scientists. Scholars from these disciplines have produced a rich literature dealing with frontiers and boundaries. A survey of this extensive literature on the two subjects reveals some major themes that have attracted most attention. These themes, which are discussed in this introductory chapter of the book, include: national histories and international diplomacy, international conflicts and cooperation, international land boundaries, comparison of land boundaries on land and sea, and the horizontal extent of airspace. The chapter also outlines the content available in the three sections of the book.

Keywords: horizontal airspace; international conflicts; international diplomacy; international land boundaries; national histories; territorial seas
