Appendix C is a letter of recommendation by Scholem, dated January 4, 1966. It probably refers to a request for a renewal of the Fellowship. Gershom Scholem stands among the towering historians of religions in the twentieth century. Although less prominent, Morton Smith was a leading student of ancient Mediterranean religions. The American historian of ancient religions, Morton Smith, studied with the great scholar of Jewish mysticism, Gershom Scholem, when he was in Jerusalem during the Second World War.
