Chapter Summary

Now, in the first decade of the 21st Century when memories of mid-20th Century conflicts are still so demonstrably alive, it is perhaps much too obvious to point out that wars cast long shadows and hand down legacies both unexpected and complex. Questions about the period's long-term significance remain very sensitive but under-examined. This chapter addresses such problems in two different ways. First, by briefly highlighting, a few poorly-known episodes and revisiting the now rarely mentioned local tribunals, the authors suggest not only that much information remains hidden about specifics, but that even such an apparently well-worn topic of how war crime investigations in general were carried out begs for both new research and a broad reassessment of what is already known. Second, more extensive essays explore the different ways in which Japanese, Dutch and Indonesians have attempted to shape and accommodate the long and short memories of wartime.
