Chapter Summary

This chapter describes the results from a study on so-called cooperative or dialogical religious education in Germany. While the study as a whole included interviews with the students, classroom observations and analysis of syllabi, as well as interviews with teachers, principals and parents. The chapter concentrates on the broadly Christian students views and attitudes vis--vis different denominations and religions. The qualitative material presented in this chapter particularly allows for a detailed reconstruction of the adolescents views of denominational identities, of ecumenical and, to some degree, interreligious relationships. The chapter demonstrates the possible contribution of empirical research to a more realistic view of the students religious interests and presuppositions, and to improving the didactics of religious education as well as to policy making, especially concerning the model of religious education that should be preferred in the future.
