Chapter Summary

This chapter presents an overview of negotiations and transitional arrangements with Lithuania. The expansion of German domination was thwarted in the South after the Sword Brothers' defeat against the Lithuanians at the battle of Saule in 1236. The remnants of the Order united with another German military-religious organization, the Knights of the Cross, which had invaded Prussia. The merger of both organizations, known as the Teutonic Order, conquered the remaining territories between the Prussian possessions and Livonia.
