Chapter Summary

This section presents the map of the Korean Peninsula. The year 2007 marked the twentieth anniversary of democratic transition in the Republic of Korea (South Korea). South Korea boasts one of the most vibrant civil societies in Pacific Asia. Information about domestic developments in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) is rare. A certain impression of the leadership’s thinking is provided by two regular events of programmatic nature that are widely publicised in the North Korean media and are accessible to most North Koreans. If 2006-07 was a period when relations between the two Koreas moved from hostility to a return to engagement, 2007-08 followed the reverse path.
