Chapter Summary

This section of this book Citizenship and Identity in a Multinational Commonwealth contains a list of studies in central European histories. A commonwealth of many faiths, cultures and identities also involves the citizens' self-interest. The book challenges some of the criticisms that have been traditionally directed against certain political arrangements of early modern Poland-Lithuania. The unanimity rule and the liberum veto have been dismissed as retrograde and inefficient ever since the Enlightenment took an interest in the trials and tribulations of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
