Chapter Summary

During Charles?s reign, the Castilian church convened thirteen Assemblies of the Clergy, but, despite its frequent meetings, the Castilian Assembly of the Clergy has remained a relatively unknown institution in Spanish and European history. The growth of the size of the subsidy payments corresponds roughly to the growth of the servicio payments during Charles V?s reign. The negotiations for the ecclesiastical contribution provide insights into governance under Charles V. Despite the similarities, there were substantial differences in the composition, structure, and prerogatives of the different Assemblies of the Clergy, and thus more research is needed on the non-French Assemblies before substantial comparative studies can be written. These studies are especially important, however, because Assemblies of the Clergy and cathedral chapters within the Spanish monarchy did occasionally communicate with each other and even exchange strategies.
