Chapter Summary

Geoffroy de Charny was one of those comparatively rare people to be considered by his peers a model knight. His works include the Demandes and the Book of Chivalry, both written in the mid-fourteenth century and both concerned with the practicalities of knighthood. The Livre de Chevalerie repeats many of the themes that are found in the Livre Charny. The Demandes pour la joute, les tournois et la guerre was written in prose, and comprises 134 questions concerning feats of arms. The introduction of the rhyming Livres Charny deals with the subject that, it quickly becomes apparent, is the one of most significance to Charny: the importance of honour. The Livre de Chevalerie repeats many of the themes that are found in the Livre Charny.
