Chapter Summary

This preliminary material presents the contents section of the book Power, Islam, and Political Elite in Iran. A Study on the Iranian Political Elite from Khomeini to Ahmadinejad. A note on acknowledgements, maps, tables, figures, appendices, and a list of abbreviations that occur in the book are provided here. An introduction to the book is also provided. The book analyzes the rivalries between the different political factions of the Iranian political elite through state institutions, and the impact of these rivalries on economic, socio-cultural, and foreign policy formulation. The analysis is structured into four phases: (1) from 1979 to 1989 during Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeinis Supreme Leadership; (2) from 19891997 during the presidency of Hojjatoleslam Hashemi Rafsanjani; (3) from 19972005 during the presidency of Hojjatoleslam Seyyed Mohammad Khatami; and (4) since the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2005.
