Chapter Summary

This front matter section of the book titled The Revolt of Prince Nuku: Cross-cultural Alliance-making in Maluku, c.1780-1810 contains the series editors preface, the Table of Contents, the acknowledgments, the list of abbreviations, the list of glossary and the list of maps. The map shows areas of East Indies, Ternate and Tidore, Halmahera, Raja Ampat, Hitu and Leitimor, and North and Middle Seram. During the period of the Dutch East India Companys rule of the Spice Islands, Prince Nuku of Tidore stands out as the local hero who successfully opposed the Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie's (VOC) oppressive trade monopoly at the end of the eighteenth century. The book analyzes how he succeeded in regaining independence for the Sultanate of Tidore by creating an alliance with the English and his Malukan and Papuan adherents.
