Chapter Summary

This is the introductory chapter of the book titled The Revolt of Prince Nuku: Cross-cultural Alliance-making in Maluku, c.1780-1810. Prince Nuku of Tidore is recognized as one of the national heroes (pahlawan nasional) of Indonesia. He was the leader of a successful rebellion against the Dutch East India Company (Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie, VOC) and its indigenous allies which lasted for more than twenty years. The chapter presents the geographical and historical setting at the time of the revolt, and the previous studies conducted on the subject. It also presents an overview of the content available in other chapters of the book.
