Chapter Summary

In the final sentences of Vol. I of the studies on Aetius, as also in the Introduction to this book, the authors announced that they would be presenting "specimen reconstructions" of Book II on cosmology. It is based on the analyses of the aims and methods of the primary witnesses. This chapter, first, gives the numbering and title, as based on the analysis and the reconstruction that follows. Next, it presents an extended analysis of the available witnesses and the contents of the chapter. The context and subject matter of the chapter are introduced. Finally, the chapter comments on how the chapter and its contents relate to the broader doxographical tradition. The final section of each chapter consists of a listing of what is called as "dialectical-doxographical parallels". The primary focus of the term is on the making of conceptual divisions and distinctions.

Keywords: context; cosmology; doxographical tradition; primary witnesses; specimen reconstructions; subject matter
