Chapter Summary

This chapter talks about Aëtius Placita 2.Titulus et Pinax. In the absence of further evidence it has to be determined what relation P's title bears to what stood in A's compendium. The argument consisted of two steps. Firstly, it can be shown that A must have had chapter headings for each chapter, since there are many cases when the contents of individual lemmata in a chapter cannot be understood without the chapter title. Secondly, to judge by the practice of an author such as Pliny in his Natural History, tables of contents may have chronologically preceded chapter titles.
