Chapter Summary

The Navy's administration was taken over by the Committee for the Navy. Like the Ministry of War, the Navy's origins date back to the Batavian Republic; it was founded in 1798 and placed under the supervision of an Agent. In 1805, the Council was replaced by a State Secretary for the Navy, who was the same year appointed Minister of the Navy. Many of the Institute of Maritime History's old editions come from the Navy and they have a rich history; the department and its library underwent many turbulent years. Books were collected together at the Institute of Maritime History from the Ministry of the Navy library but also from other naval institutions such as the MarineWillemsoord Library, the Marines teWillemsoord Directorate, the Naval Military School, Marines Hellevoetsluis, the Naval School for Ship building and the National Sea Instruments Audit.
