Chapter Summary

On 29 August 1826 the War Archive and the Topographical Office were separated. The War Archive remained the depot for maps, plans, memoranda of defence and all other documents relating to the 'geodesy, geography, topography, statistics and military history of the Kingdom'. Both the general staff and other military authorities were required to deposit relevant items with the War Archive. The War Archive's large book collection was transferred to the Ministry's library. The Ministry of War's library grew substantially during 19th century. Books from before 1801 that stem from the Ministry's cultural estate can still be found in its smaller museums; these are recognized Royal Netherlands. Among the books in the Engineers Museum is a magnificent and richly illustrated copy of the second edition of Menno van Coehoorn's most important work, and a very rare pocket atlas with hand-coloured folding maps from 1741,.
