Chapter Summary

This chapter presents the introduction to the book Warfare and the Age of Printing: Catalogue of Early Printed Books from before 1801 in Dutch Military Collections, which contains descriptions of all books printed prior to 1801 (up to and including 31 December 1800) that can be found in one or more of the participating institutions, regardless of their subject. The books described in the chapter have been classified systematically and have been sorted both chronologically and alphabetically per subject. Editions, print runs and publications have been included separately. Bibliographic unity has formed the basis for the descriptions. Umbrella and part descriptions have been created for multi-part works, each with its own title page and signature. With few exceptions, the umbrella description contains the following elements: Authors and suchlike of all the parts; umbrella title; year(s) of publication; number of parts, and any annotations.

Keywords: Dutch military collections; printing techniques; warfare
