Chapter Summary

This section of the book Warfare and the age of printing: Catalogue of early printed books from before 1801 in Dutch military collections contains a list of illustration of civic guard, and citizen guard. The book comprises all early printed books from before 1801 held within several libraries belonging to the Ministry of Defence of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It is therefore the first time ever that the total body of early printed books within the sphere of a ministry is charted and catalogued. It is unique because of the quality and historical reach of the books it contains: with works dating from the Renaissance to the Napoleonic era, it shows how warfare evolved and became an object of study itself.

Keywords: citizen guard; civic guard; early printed books; Napoleonic era
