Chapter Summary

This front matter section of the book Warfare and the Age of Printing: Catalogue of Early Printed Books from before 1801 in Dutch Military Collections contains the table of contents, acknowledgments, preface and an introduction. It also contains a preview to the chapter: The Ministry of Defence's treasury of books: 10,000 volumes from the 16th to the 18th century. For centuries such technical or scholarly arms of the military as artillery and engineers required the comparison of theory with practice. Professional works, available through libraries at the corps level, were of primary importance both before and after the development of centrally organised and centrally financed educational institutes. The two distinguishable forms of military library are those at the corps level and those of military institutions and academies.
