This front matter section of the book Warfare and the Age of Printing: Catalogue of Early Printed Books from before 1801 in Dutch Military Collections contains the table of contents, acknowledgments, preface and an introduction. It provides an overview of the chapter: The Ministry of Defence's treasury of books: 10,000 volumes from the 16th to the 18th century. Most of the books described in the chapter originate from the Ministry of Defence's historical legacy. The oldest works date from the 16th century. Although the Dutch military library system was established only in the 1820s, the wealth of books belonging to the Ministry of Defence dating from 16th to the 18th centuries, as well as their inscribed provenance, indicate an enduring military book culture. Many of the library's books originate from the soldiers' baggage.
