Chapter Summary

In the present generation of biblical scholarship, interest in theological interpretation, long out of favour with biblical specialists, has resurfaced. The overall idea is: humans are driven by desires and passions; these have no limits, are never fully satisfied; in the interest of social life, desires have to be limited, curbed, and harnessed; the Decalogue belongs to the moral traditions that help us to impose limits on our desires. Salvation is contained not in Christianity as a religion, but in the story that Christians tell - in bearing witness to the biblical God and what God has done in history for our salvation.
