Chapter Summary

This chapter provides an overview of the book, which deals in detail with the status of women under Islam and modern Arab legislation, and covering not only their obligations but their very considerable rights. It shows that whether they are Muslim or not, women under Islam are not the powerless followers of men that much of the non-Muslim world would have us believe. In the modern Muslim world, which embraces not only the Arab states, but Indonesia, Pakistan, Malaysia, Nigeria and Iran, women do enjoy respect, security, marital rights, maintenance, guardianship and custody of their children.
