Chapter Summary

This chapter presents a list of books that are relevant to the book Beda Mayr, Vertheidigung der katholischen Religion (1789). The book talks about the Benedictine monk, Beda Mayr. Contemporaries praised Mayr as a keen, enlightened, and pious thinker. The important historical lexicons and a number of newer research publications also describe Beda Mayr as a key representative of the Catholic Enlightenment. Besides being a brilliant academic, Mayr also supported reform: he thought that the powers of the papacy regarding jurisdiction and the declaration of magisterial teaching should be more restricted than most of his contemporaries did, and he was a champion of ecumenism. The enlightened Benedictine monks of the eighteenth century were the product of the Catholic Enlightenment and the ecclesiastical politics put forward by the state.
