Chapter Summary

The author deems the vita Taciti as an ideal object of study for an intending commentator whose interest is primarily literary. The factual information in the vita is minimal, but, it displays a rich literary inventiveness in its numerous documents, speeches, acclamations and letters. It is an excellent specimen of what Syme has called the mature manner of the author. The author makes preliminary remarks on the composition of the life, both with regard to its macrostructure, and the composition in detail, its microstructure, as seen in the opening chapters of the life sentence by sentence. The overall structure of the vita Taciti has been presented in detail. A chapter-wise and section-wise description is laid out in detail ending with the outline of the senate meeting that has been covered in the last 4 chapters. The difference in the themes set across vita Taciti and Historia Augusta have been delineated.
