Chapter Summary

This chapter presents the idea of thinking about creativity in terms of the basic concepts of dialectical phenomenology. It suggests that only the dialectical structure and meaning of the creative process, with the thought that study of this process in terms of dialectical phenomenology could open it up to a genuine mode of comprehension. It is generally agreed that creation is not a one-sided mechanical making according to a fixed formula or routine. So, for example, creative photography is not like the process by which the passport photographer takes picture. In thinking about creativity we tend to think first of the artist as creator and his activity as creation. The master-slave or lord-bondsman relationship arises out of the struggle for recognition. Two egos stand in confrontation. Each, as an ego, seeks recognition by the other as being 'I.' Each seeks to be the essence of their mutual relationship.
