Art historians tell us many fascinating things about the activities of artists. A natural assumption, which we will have cause to question, is that provenential properties will have at best indirect artistic relevance, through their bearing on those properties of a work that are the proper objects of artistic appreciation and evaluation. For both Briskman and Carroll are targeting the idea that creativity is a quality of psychological processes occurring in the artist. In arguing against 'aesthetic empiricism' (AE), critics have offered hypothetical examples where what are arguably distinct works with distinct artistic contents would be indistinguishable on empiricist grounds. Originality, Bruce Vermazen has maintained, has no bearing on a work's 'artistic value,' its value as a work of art. The deliberate and intentional generation of something novel that contributes to the value of a work seems to be just what is involved in artistic creativity.
