Th e Homiletics of Hermann Hering is written as a theory and history of pulpit oratory. Hering describes the tradition, genre and analysis of Christian sermon. His work is considered as indispensable (W. Schtz) for a proper description of the history of preaching. Historia, doctrina and praecepta in Herings Homiletics are discussed from a rhetorical perspective and in light of the homiletic literature of the 19th and early 20th century. The oratorical aims of preaching the rhetorical tractatio of religious matters and Herings critical presentation of important sermons from early Christianity up to the 19th century are considered.
