Chapter Summary

In early Pentecostal assemblies, whose revivals occurred in explicit contradistinction from traditional church structures and hierarchies, the initial inclination was to reject institutional structures altogether. Pentecostal churches are pragmatic in orientation, a tendency that arises from an understanding of church life that is intimately connected to mission- to the concrete tasks of evangelising the world and, thereby, of growing churches. The impetus for strengthening the female influence in the Assemblies of God in Australia (AGA) can be found in the heritage of Australian Pentecostalism, with the pioneering role of Pentecostal women such as Sarah Jane Lancaster and Mina Ross Brawner. Cultural values are the meanings, values and orientations that inform, uphold and challenge social values and structures. The Scriptures, and theological notions of the trinity, may provide valuable models and metaphors for conceiving of church unity and diversity, but systematic ecclesiology needs to account for more than just ecclesial ideals.
